Minister of Environment and
Innovation, Mahama Ayariga has advised the general public to report any fuel
station whose siting is dangerous to the authorities.
According to him, though the
Ministry, through the Environmental Protection Agency, is responsible for
ensuring routine maintenance of fuel stations in the country, it needs the help
of the general public.
Mahama Ayariga’s comment comes after
almost 90 lives were consumed in the GOIL filling station explosion after fuel
leaked from underground storage tanks after last Wednesday's floods
in Accra.
The scene at the Goil filling
station when the fire died down
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), loose valves led to the spillage of fuel which caught fire.
Three days of mourning which starts
on Monday have been declared for the departed souls.
Mr. Ayariga on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem
morning show Monday, pledged that the EPA would close down fuel stations
which do not meet the appropriate safety levels.
"We are encouraging the general
public who feel uncomfortable about any fuel stations to report to our ministry
in order to take the necessary actions and to prevent further accidents."
A task force made up of EPA and
private security personnel has been set up for that purpose, he added.
Officials of the Ministry will
meet today with the necesary authorities to determine the way forward.
