The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed the power
outage at the Kantamanto Market to a maintenance exercise they are
currently undertaking in the area.
The company says it is acting on the instructions of the Accra
Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in the wake of rampant fire outbreaks in the
city.
The Public Relations Officer of the ECG at the Head Office, Mr. Daniel
Adjei Larbi was reacting to a Nyankonton Mu Nsem report that power
supply to Kantamanto market had been disconnected on purpose.
Traders and residents at Kantamanto have been without electricity for the past five days.
Mr. Adjei Larbi revealed that it was at a meeting with the AMA that the
latter issued that specific directive to disconnect the area from the
national grid.
He said the AMA explained to them that the market was not well
structured after several fire outbreaks, adding that the place was
crowded with unnecessary structures and wiring which makes it fire
prone.
Mr. Adjei Larbi said until the AMA completes its rehabilitation work at Kantamanto, the ECG will not connect the lights.
