Ghana Sports Minister, Mahama Ayariga has confirmed CAF’s letter asking the country to consider hosting next year’s Africa Cup of Nations as a result of Morocco’s withdrawal.
The continent’s football governing body has written to some countries as a backup plan.
Morocco is reported to be having doubts about hosting the continent’s flagship event because of the deadly Ebola disease.
Ghana has bid to host the tournament in 2017 but competing with five other countries.
But the Deputy General Secretary of the Association, Dr. Justice Yankson says even considering hosting the CAF tournament in Ghana means government is taking an unnecessary risk.
He noted that in the wake of the Ebola outbreak, bringing people from different countries especially from countries hit by the outbreak will be a bad decision.
“The symptoms will start manifesting in the human body after some days and so if someone is allowed in the country and has Ebola, it will be difficult to ascertain it and so before the symptoms starts showing, that person would have infected a lot of people.”
“We as GMA executives will have to know what government is doing toward the situation and also we need to talk to the World Health Organization and most especially the Ministry of Health what logistics they have put in place properly before they think of hosting the CAF” he said on TV3 late News.
